General Meeting, September 8, 2016 — Coastal Wetlands Ecosystems and Man’s Impact

Dr. Anna Armitage is an associate professor in Texas A&M University at Galveston’s Marine Biology department. On Thursday, September 8, she will join the Sierra Club’s monthly meeting to share her knowledge about our changing coastal wetland ecosystems.
Thursday, September 8, at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church 1805 W Alabama. Program starts at 7:30 PM. (Informal social period 7:00 PM.) Visitors always welcome.

 

Evening Benefit

Join us Tuesday, September 27, at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for a special evening to benefit the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter and Houston Group. Gather with like–minded folks, enjoy good company, great appetizers and desserts. See displays of local conservation efforts and service projects. The Houston Electric Auto Association will also have electric vehicles on display. The main event will be from 6:30-8:30pm, and Arboretum walks between 6-7pm.

Houston Group Executive Committee Election 2016 

Each December the Houston Group holds an election to fill positions on the Group’s nine member Executive Committee (Excom). The Houston Sierra Club is now soliciting nominations for the election that will be held this December 2016. Members of the Group’s Executive Committee serve terms of 2 years.

Galveston Bay Plan

The Galveston Bay Estuary Program has set October 2016 for the first public workshop for revision of the 21 year old Galveston Bay Plan (GBP, officially called a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan). This is the first revision of the GBP since it was approved in 1995.

Climate Reality Project

On August 16–18, the Climate Reality Project came to Texas, training hundreds of people from all over the United States and the world to be advocates on behalf of the climate and to empower others with knowledge to create a culture of awareness and action. As Vice–President Al Gore opened the three day training, he told us that passion is central to how we will deal with this crisis.

Recycling Glass

The City of Houston has added more glass recycling drop off locations in recent weeks. Through a new partnership with Strategic Materials Inc., North America's largest glass recycler, the City is trying to provide citizens with more options to recycle glass.

Here are a few well edited videos that illustrate and explain the glass recycling process. Advances in glass sorting technologies now allow a greater percentage of glass items to be recycled and reused, thereby saving natural resources and reducing energy use and carbon emissions.
