CO2 Emissions are Now Tracked
Climate TRACE is a global non-profit coalition created to make meaningful climate action faster and easier by independently tracking greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with unprecedented detail and speed. Their mission is to harness satellite imagery and other forms of remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and collective data science expertise to track human-caused GHG emissions with unprecedented detail and speed. The main CO2 emissions emitters in Mono and Inyo Counties are the airports and the landfills. See their interactive map.
The Harms of Exploratory Drilling

While mining has a huge impact on the environment, exploratory drilling impacts the environment too. Clearly, on a much smaller scale, but it has its harms. Remembering Phil Pister
Most of us know the legend of how Phil Pister saved the Owens Pupfish in August of 1969. But I wanted to know more, so I listened to two hours of interviews with Phil recorded in December of 1991 for the Eastern California Museum. What a gift these recordings turned out to be. Phil was best known for his vast knowledge of the biology of the area, but he also expressed his opinions about things as varied as the civil rights tragedy of the internment of his Japanese friends in Stockton who were taken to Manzanar. BLM Plans for Solar in Western States
The BLM is nearing the end of the public comment period for solar siting in western states, the deadline is scheduled for March 1, 2023. Based on the BLM Solar Mapper, you can see what areas are open to solar and then you can form your comments. Click on BLM Solar Development Areas in the box to the left, then on the last box, Variance Areas. The blue is where solar projects can go.
Evaluating Vegetation at LADWP Mitigation Sites
When you first visit an LADWP mitigation site, it can be hard to tell what to look for. Some problems are obvious: a field full of Russian thistle, for example. But what constitutes a healthy plant ecosystem here in Payahuunadü? The Long-Term Water Agreement (LTWA) divides local vegetation into five management types based on vegetation water needs, and marks parcels according to their management type as defined in 1984-1987 plant surveys.
