Executive Committee Elections

The Chesapeake Bay Group (CBG) of the Sierra Club serves the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, and the counties of Accomack and North Hampton on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

An elected executive committee (ExCom) of seven members leads the CBG. Members are elected for two-year terms. Any person in good standing as a Sierra Club member may be a candidate for election to the ExCom. A nominating committee considers prospective nominees and submits a slate of candidates to the membership on a ballot available to members on November 1. Candidates other than those selected by this committee may be nominated by written petition with the signatures of 15 active members. Nominations may be submitted to the Nominations Committee chair, Ashanti Kincannon via email at (alkincannon@vwu.edu), or by mail to (439 Pennsylvania Ave, Norfolk, VA 23508). Voting for Cheasapeake Bay Group executive committee nominees will be conducted from Nov 1 to Nov 29 this year. 

Look in the fall issue of VA Sierran for instructions on how to vote online or to request a paper ballot.

November 22, 2021 -- The deadline for all ballots/e-ballots to be postmarked/submitted for at-large and group board elections. Members in good standing may vote for up to (3) nominees to the ExCom.

Job Description: Ex-Com Member Chesapeake Bay Group

Purpose of Position: Provide guidance and leadership to the Group in making policy decisions to carry out the mission of the
Club and meet the Group’s defined goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and promote the mission of the Sierra Club
  • Attend Executive Committee meetings and General meetings
  • Lead and provide educational training and/or conservation opportunities to the general membership
  • Promote the Outings Program
  • Participate in long range planning
  • Actively assist in fundraising activities or contribute financially
  • Ensure financial stability and solvency
  • Modify and allocate resources; must be consistent with the opportunities, the abilities, and the commitment of the chapter/group
  • Monitor, question, and evaluate club activities
  • Provide Leadership and Vision within the chapter/group
  • Contribute a sense of camaraderie and teamwork

    I categorize myself as a person that has a responsibility to help protect the environment; I believe that we as humans need to pay more attention to the environment and find ways to stop the destruction. I use my spare time doing everything I can to educate people on the condition of the environment and what each of us can do each day to make the earth a place that can be habited by humans in the future. I previously served as Chair for the Virginia state chapter and am elected member of the national Volunteer Leadership Advisory Committee (VLAC). I am also a member of 350.org and work with Mothers Out Front, Moms Clean Air Force, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) and other environmental groups.

    I am very passionate about working with all individuals on issues involving the environment and Climate Change awareness. It is my personal goal to continue to do so as long as I live.

    Honorable Cheryl B. Turpin served in the General Assembly from 2018-2019 representing the 85th House District. She has been a secondary science teacher for more than 25 years, with the past 10 years teaching AP Environmental Science. Cheryl has been a resident of Virginia Beach for the past 22 years and has two daughters Ellison and Patricia.
