COMMUNICATION Settings: The total membership of the Virginia Chapter is around 20,000 members, but just over half have updated their email preferences so they can receive membership-relevant information and action opportunities from the Chapter, the digital newsletter, and action and meeting opportunities. Failure to update email preferences may result in members not receiving ANY email from the Virginia Chapter or its respective groups. The good news is that the fix is easy with internet access. Visit and log in or sign up for access to the site (it’s free!) at https://myaccount.sierraclub.org/MyAccountLogin
- Once you are logged in, scroll down to select “Communication Preferences” under the “Manage My Account” section
- Now select “Manage email newsletters and email contact preferences.”
You will now find yourself on a page that enables you to tailor your email preferences. I strongly encourage you to ensure you are subscribed to the My Chapter category as it will enable you to receive information specific to our members. Updating email preferences should only take about two minutes, but it goes a long way in strengthening our chapter’s communication efforts.

Our Mission

- Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources
- Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment

Priority Issues
- Enact 5 cents plastic bag tax -Contact your Mayor and City Council!
- Advocate for Dark Sky initiatives and proper outdoor lighting
- Promote Conservation and energy efficiency
- Climate Change, Sea Level Rise and Recurrent Flooding: Reduce the threat through prevention, adaptation and mitigation.
- Support EPA Clean Power Plan and Promote Energy Efficiency to Reduce Fossil Fuel Use: Helps reduce climate change caused by CO2 emissions, reduces dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates impacts on public and environmental health.
- Clean, Renewable Energy/Solar & Offshore Wind, Oppose Offshore Drilling: Leave fossil fuels in the earth and rapidly convert to clean, renewable power generation.
- Beyond Coal and Fossil Fuels to Mitigate Climate Change and for Cleaner Air and Water : Let's work to close existing coal and gas powered plants, force Dominion and others to clean up existing coal ash sites, stop the export of coal and in the interim make Norfolk Southern and other transporters/exporters mitigate the release of fugitive coal dust.

Sierra Club Information
The Coastal Virginia (COVA) Group serves the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, and the counties of Accomack and Northampton on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. COVA is one of 10 Groups in the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club. There are 64 Chapters in the National Sierra Club.
