What do Sierra Club volunteers do, anyhow?

Sierra Club, Falls of the James Group volunteers play a vital role in advancing environmental conservation while raising awareness of local threats and issues in the Richmond region, and across Virginia. Our dedicated volunteers engage in a variety of activities aimed at protecting clean air, land and water, and advocating for policies that combat climate change. One of our primary activities is organizing and participating in local events such as rallies, clean-ups, tree-plantings, and community awareness campaigns that educate the public about environmental issues and encourage action.

In addition to grassroots efforts, Sierra Club volunteers often work on advocacy projects to influence policy at the local, state, and national levels. This can involve lobbying decision makers, attending or speaking at city council and board of supervisors meetings, and mobilizing community members to support renewable energy legislation or sustainability initiatives.

Our Sierra Club volunteers are critical in building community connections and fostering a sense of stewardship in local communities. They facilitate outdoor educational programs, lead hikes and nature outings, and create spaces for folks to experience and appreciate the beauty of the Richmond region’s natural resources. Volunteers also help to fundraise and spread the word about the organization’s mission, ensuring that essential projects and campaigns receive the support they need to be effective.

Through these experiences, volunteers inspire others to take action for the environment, cultivating a new generation of environmental activists committed to creating a healthier environment and promoting a more sustainable future for us all.
