The years-long case against the E.D. Edwards Dynegy power plant regarding air pollution violations has reached the court hearing date, held on July 13th in U.S. Federal Court, Peoria. Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Respiratory Health Association, and the Environmental Law and Policy Center are representing area citizens in a complaint regarding air pollution caused by the Edwards plant documented by plant records from April 2008 through 2012. Permitted levels for opacity limits were listed as going over allowed discharges 2,339 times. Opacity limits affect particulate matter or particles that are released into the air. These pollutants are known to cause breathing problems and other health issues, especially for those with breathing difficulties, the elderly, and young children. The litigation is requesting that the Edwards plant be required to operate in compliance with opacity limitations, and various penalties are being sought.
