The Galesburg Public Library in Knox County is excited to announce the launch of a seed library! If you’re unfamiliar, a seed library is a system for exchanging seeds in a community. Participants can come to the library to get seeds for their garden, or, if you’re an avid gardener already, you can bring your own seeds in to trade with other community members. The seed library will house hundreds of seeds for flowers, fruits, herbs, and vegetables available for patrons to take and grow in their own gardens. Information about growing various types of plants in the Central Illinois region will also be available.

The goal of the seed library is to encourage members of the Galesburg, Knox County, and surrounding communities to grow native plants and gain knowledge about gardening. We also hope to increase the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables to those experiencing food instability. The seed library is free for any community member — you do not need to have a Galesburg library card to participate.

GPL will be hosting a kickoff event for the library on Monday, April 25 at 6:30PM. At the event, participants will select up to five types of seeds to take home, and get guidance on how to get their garden started. More information about the kickoff event can be found on the library’s website closer to the event.
