Third CO2 Pipeline Announced for Illinois

A third company has announced plans for a high pressure liquified carbon dioxide pipeline system with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) for Illinois. Oxy (Occidental Petroleum) is planning a CO2 pipeline from two Peoria County sources and a third source is also involved. The line will run to McLean County. The sequestration site is proposed near Atlanta, Logan County, not far from the McLean County line. CO2 pipelines are highly hazardous.

The Coalition to Stop CO2 Pipelines held a public webinar in June with three speakers, including Durward Pettis, Chief of the local Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department in Yazoo County, Mississippi. He rescued residents affected by the February 2020 CO2 pipeline rupture near Satartia , Mississippi, and shared both his experience as well as what first responders should have had regarding training and equipment, to be able to respond to a CO2 line leak. Check out the video recording for comments from two experts on CO2 pipelines and Mr. Pettis’ concerns, as someone who has been on the scene where 300 people had to be evacuated and 45 required emergency room assistance.
