Powerton Plant
Powerton Plant near Pekin

The aged and polluting Powerton coal-fired power plant south of Pekin has a new proposed draft Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) up for review. Local residents are encouraged to request a public hearing regarding this permit. Powerton is one of the largest area air pollution sources. Since 2009 lawsuits have been filed regarding its violations of levels of opacity particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. According to the publicly available EPA ECHO database, this plant has been in noncompliance regarding its air permit levels for 11 out of the last 12 quarters. In 2014 it is listed on the ECHO database as having discharged 21 billion pounds of carbon dioxide; 11 million pounds of nitrogen oxides; 27,000 pounds of methane; and 61 pounds of mercury into the area atmosphere, along with many other pollutants.
