SUBJECT: Support for OneShoreline’s SB 1 grant application for Subregional Adaptation Plan (SRAP) for San Mateo County Southern Bayside Cities Shoreline Resilience Plan

Dear Ms. Eckerle,

We wish to express Sierra Club’s support for the coordinated, multi-jurisdictional sea level rise adaptation planning proposed in OneShoreline’s application to the California Ocean Protection Council’s SB 1 Sea Level Rise Adaptation Planning Grant Program for the San Mateo County Southern Bayside Cities Shoreline Resilience Plan.

Sierra Club’s Bay Alive Campaign began in 2020 with the explicit goal of protecting and restoring San Francisco Bay, for both people and wildlife, as sea levels rise. Today, sea level rise poses an unprecedented threat to Bay Area communities and ecosystems, with valuable habitats and ecosystems as well as vulnerable neighborhoods and infrastructure already experiencing the impacts of rising sea levels and flooding.

We strongly support the development of a multi-jurisdictional sub-regional shoreline adaptation plan that will include nature-based adaptation solutions, keeping Bay ecosystems healthy, and include meaningful engagement of local residents and community stakeholders, while considering the appropriate adaptation strategies for the varying shoreline. We understand that the project will update vulnerability assessments and develop a sub-regional adaptation plan that will align with the guidelines required by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (RSAP).

The Sierra Club and our Bay Alive Campaign support the urgently needed regional collaboration proposed in this multi-jurisdictional project and look forward to participating with OneShoreline and its partners on this very important undertaking for the communities and the Bay itself.

Respectfully,

Jennifer Hetterly
