PSE&G Power has not paid the Societal Benefits Charge on gas sales for the last eight to ten years. Last year the failure to pay the SBC was estimated at $47 million. PSE&G has gotten away with not paying their fair share for almost a decade to the tune of almost $300 million.

"PSE&G has discovered a new kind of green power. They use their power not to pay the Societal Benefits Charge, and then pocket the green," said Jeff Tittel, New Jersey Sierra Club Director.

"PSE&G stands for Public Subsidy Energy Group because when they do not pay their taxes others do. So we end up subsidizing PSE&G," Tittel said. "It is unconscionable for PSEG to be tax dodger when the state is broke and the Governor is taking money from the Clean Energy Programs and the BPU is cutting rebates. Instead of gutting programs the BPU should be going after PSE&G for the money they owe. It is really aggravating when PSE&G is making record profits and raising rates."

PSE&G is attempting make a $250 million rate increase while they haven't paid the SBC, which goes to clean energy, or their allotment under RGGI. The SBC contributes to green jobs, energy efficiency and renewables. When PSE&G fails to pay the SBC, it prevents people from being able to get energy from renewables and forces them to buy more energy from PSE&G. Instead of being the Board of Promoting Utilities, the BPU should do its job and make PSE&G pay.
