Blue Ridge Group will be helping NC Wildlife Federation's High Country Wild with maintenance work on Old John's River Road on the Blue Ridge Parkway Friday August 28. High Country Wild has adopted this trail while Blue Ridge Group has adopted Price Lake Trail. 

We will be helping each other with maintaining the trails twice a year. We also inviting volunteers from Transition Blue Ridge and High Country Audubon to help. The work involves cutting back encroaching rhododendron, briars, and branches; removing small fallen trees that block the trail; and improving trail tread where possible. We will meet across the Parkway from the trailhead at the Sims Pond parking area (Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 295.9) at 9:00 on August 28th. There is also some limited parking at the trailhead about 1/10 mile south on the Parkway (please be sure to not block the road). We will have some hand pruners, loppers, saws, and gloves for volunteers to use, but if you have something you can bring with you that would be helpful. Also please bring water and  snacks, clothing appropriate for the weather, and wear closed-toe shoes. We expect to work on the trail until about noon. We hope you can join us and help the Parkway maintain trails that we all enjoy. 

Blue Ridge Group has purchased 500 weevils to help control the non-native Mile-a-minute vine. We had hoped to release the weevils on July 31 but there was a problem at the lab that raises them so it's being pushed back, possibly to September. As we learn more we'll let you know which of the local mile-a-minute sites where the release will occur but at this time are still coordinating details with other involved groups. Details will be posted here once we confirm the time and location of the release.
