The Vital Role of Raptors in Orange County

Guardians of the Skies, Ecology, Heritage and Conservation

By Linda Pauer

Birds of prey have captivated human imagination for centuries, inspiring mythologies, art, and a sense of wild freedom. In southern California, their survival is a testament to the resilience of wildlife and the delicate balance between human progress and natural heritage. By understanding, respecting, and protecting these aerial hunters, we ensure that their shadows continue to sweep across our sunsets, wild and wondrous, for generations to come.

The Sierra Club supports the protection of wild lands that sustain our environment. Despite their resilience, many raptors are threatened by human activities, especially habitat fragmentation, secondary poisoning from rodenticides and illegal shooting or trapping. Key conservation initiatives include habitat restoration, stricter regulations on toxins and ongoing efforts by organizations like The Orange County Bird of Prey Center who work tirelessly to protect and rehabilitate raptors while educating the public to promote coexistence.
