Outings for Winter Jan-March 2026


JAN 3 (SAT) 8:15 at the Holland Community Center the Saguaro Group will host a talk followed by a hike. Vicki Preston, the director of the Desert Foothills Land Trust, will share with us information about the work and history of the Land Trust. Following the presentation she will lead us on a hike to one of the Land Trust’s protected spaces that is not open to the public. Meet at 8:15 at the Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th St., Scottsdale. We will carpool from the Holland Center as there is only limited parking at the hiking spot. Dress for the weather. The hike will be about 2 miles with some elevation gain. Sign up on

JAN 10, 2026 (SAT) TIME TBA. “D” Pioneer Park day hike (3.1 Miles OW), EC162). Enjoy the natural beauty of the area on open trails with views of Prescott. If you want to make a longer loop it is 4.9 miles 331 EC. Outing is subject to unforeseen winter weather. Advise if you will be doing the longer loop. January 31th(SAT) Time 0900. “C” “Big Rock loop” day hike in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, Prescott. (4 mi RT, EC about 400 ft.) This is a fun loop that starts at Cayuse Day Use parking lot and consists of trails 351, 348 and 347. We will eat lunch/snack upon Big Rock–an easily scrambled large rock with an impressive view. At that point we will take a moment to discuss drought/climate change impact on  the local ponderosa pines. FEB 7 (SAT) 8:30 Saguaro Group social hike at Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, 12943 E. Paris Dr., Scottsdale. We will be hiking the Marcus Landslide trail, which is a pretty flat hike of 1.5 miles in, and then those that want to can continue for another, steeper 1-mile loop. The total mileage will be 3–4.5 miles. The scenery is beautiful. We will meet at 8:30 at the trailhead sign right below the restrooms. Please dress for the weather and bring water; there is no drinking water at the trailhead. FEB 14, 2026 (SAT) TIME TBA. “D” Pine Lakes Trail #316 and Water Tower Trail #315 oop (2.5 miles RT, EC 275). This route features a short and scenic trail through areas of ponderosa pine, alligator juniper, and scrub oak. Outing is subject to unforeseen winter weather. February 21(SAT) Time 0800. “B” Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Trail day hike, Yarnell. (7 mi RT, 1,715 ft. EC). We will hike this challenging route to pay tribute to the Granite Mountain Hotshots 19 and learn about wildfires and prevention. MAR 7 (SAT) 8:15 at the Holland Community Center 34250 N. 60th St. Scottsdale. The Saguaro group will host a talk followed by a hike. Sandy Bahr, the Sierra Club’s Grand Chapter Director,  will share with us what is happening with the state legislature. Following the talk we will hike the Apache Wash loop trail at the Apache Wash Trailhead, a 3.5-mile easy hike. Dress for the weather and bring water. MAR 14, 2026 (SAT) TIME “D” Santa Fe Trail 709 dayhike (4 miles RT, 200 ft. EC). Hike on the old railroad bed downhill around City Hill to the Old Iron Springs Community with Railroad Historian Tom Slaback. We will be discussing the Prescott Forest ecology. Spectacular views. March 28th(SAT) Time 0800. “C” Little Granite Mountain Trail day hike, Prescott. (7 mi RT, approximately 1,000 ft. EC). This hike will start at Little Granite Mountain Trail #37, then finish on trail #39. We will enjoy spectacular views of Skull Valley throughout. We will visit the giant alligator juniper, where we will stop for lunch and then continue to the Contreras trailhead (trail 3#8). We will discuss responsible recreation usage and the history of the Doce Fire. Vehicle shuttle is needed.
