Funds will support important conservation and education efforts
BROOME COUNTY, NY — Today the Sierra Club Susquehanna Group announced that they donated $250 to the Fred L. Waterman Conservation Education Center, located in Apalachin, NY. The donation follows the December presentation to Group members of “Creating a Bird-Friendly Backyard” by Michelle Knuepfer, Naturalist at the Waterman Conservation Center.
The Waterman Conservation Center is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting conservation education, outdoor recreation, and environmental literacy. It owns and operates six different nature preserves in the Southern Tier, including the IBM Glen in Endicott and Brick Pond in Owego. Its Interpretive Center in Apalachin hosts community events and guided walks, and maintains educational exhibits.
The Susquehanna Group, along with the the million-plus-member national Sierra Club, advocates for
the exploration, enjoyment, and protection of wild places, and responsible use of our planet’s resources. The Group, which covers Broome, Chenango, Delaware & Sullivan counties, as well as parts of Tioga & Otsego counties, aims to support other local nonprofit groups doing work in line with their mission. Contributions to the Waterman Education Center help them continue their important conservation efforts by supporting the upkeep and maintenance of their six nature preserves, including protection and treatment of old-growth hemlock trees in the IBM Glen that have been devastated by the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Donations also support them in their mission to provide high-quality educational programs for the community.
The Susquehanna Group encourages the community to join them in supporting the Fred L. Waterman Conservation Education Center. Donations can be made in-person or by mail to 403 Hilton Rd. Apalachin, NY, 13732 or over the phone at 607-625-2221.
