On August 28, 2025 the Colorado Sierra Club announced the dissolution of the Poudre Canyon Group, located in northern Colorado effective immediately. This decision comes after careful consideration of recent challenges impacting the group's ability to maintain the welcoming, inclusive environment that is fundamental to Sierra Club's mission and values.
This was a difficult decision, but ultimately it reflects our shared commitment to mutually creating groups where members can meaningfully and respectfully contribute to the shared work, within the scope of the policies and procedures that our organization has established. When our organizational values are not upheld, it unnecessarily burdens our work to achieve our mission and requires action.
To be very clear: Dissolving the group does not affect individual membership status' in the Colorado Chapter of the Sierra Club nor does it stop members in northern Colorado from participating in important work and volunteer opportunities. Instead, this dissolution is an opportunity to build a structure that is more functional and inclusive for all Sierra Club members.
The next steps will include a process to gather feedback from Sierra Club members and supporters about how to advance our mission across the state, so that we can continue to explore, enjoy, and protect the environment.
The Sierra Club Colorado Steering Committee and staff look forward to supporting a process to determine how to move forward and effectively do the crucial grassroots organizing and community building that it will take to win on our shared priorities across the state.
