The Pikes Peak Group notes with sadness the passing of Jean Smith, one of the Colorado Sierra Club Chapter’s most active and ardent members. Together with her late husband Art, Jean was a mainstay of the Enos Mills Group of Sierra Club in the 1990s and beyond. After moving to the Pikes Peak region, Jean served as Pikes Peak Group campaign coordinator for Keep Central Colorado Wild campaign, promoting the 2006 Wild Connections Conservation Plan, a long-range vision for management of Pike and San Isabel National Forest to promote the protection of roadless and potential wilderness areas. In May 2004, Jean received the Wilderness Society's Environmental Hero award for her role in preparing this plan and as founder of the Wild Connections conservation organization. Jean served Wild Connections from 1995 to 2025 in many roles, from member of the board of directors to webmaster and data management “guru.” She will be greatly missed.
