What a night!
Voters just delivered the largest electoral wave since 1894, a resounding rejection of Trump and Congressional Republicans' politics of corruption and corporate greed.
The mandate is clear: the American people are demanding new leaders who will make life more affordable, protect our democracy, and hold polluters, utility companies, and the Trump administration accountable.
The Trump agenda has left families facing skyrocketing energy bills and polluted communities during a time of extreme weather and climate change, while fossil fuel CEOs reap the profits. It turns out, enough IS enough.
The Sierra Club endorsed 2,426 candidates up and down the ballot all across the country. Up and down the ticket, people turned out for candidates committed to fighting for public lands, clean air and water, and climate action.
Together, this people-powered movement delivered so many historic wins that we couldn't possibly list them all here. Here are a few highlights:
- Michigan! Abdul El-Sayed won in a historic victory, despite enormous spending and hate-filled rhetoric by the opposition. In Michigan's 7th district, climate champion Will Lawrence flipped the seat on a platform opposing polluting data centers and corporate political funding.
- Texans elected Gina Hinojosa as the first Latina governor of Texas and James Talarico to the Senate, and flipped the state house! Hinojosa opposed the expansion of data centers as a core issue in her campaign, calling for tighter regulations on water and power use.
- Democratic state trifectas across the country, including Wisconsin, Arizona, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Maine, mean that these critical states can deliver for their communities and pass bold policies at the state level.
And in hundreds of other races around the country, from high-profile wins to lesser-known Public Utility Commissions and Railroad Commissions, voters turned out for clean and affordable energy, public lands, clean air and water, and protection from polluting data centers and corruption.
All these wins didn't happen by accident. Sierra Club members and supporters organized, phonebanked, and knocked doors in communities across the country.
Your time, your conversations, your donations, and your belief that we can build something better are a big part of why voters made the choice they did. Thank you.
Now comes the next chapter. We'll be working to make sure the leaders we just elected seize this moment to take bold action on climate and protect our democracy.
It's time to hold the Trump administration accountable for its corruption and its unlawful moves that put the health and safety of our communities at risk. It's time to invest in a clean energy future that works for everyone, and protect our communities from extreme weather and growing climate impacts. And it's time to push back on the unchecked growth of polluting data centers that drive up energy costs and suck up water resources.
This work starts today. Let's make sure these new leaders hear from us at every step.
We did it. Let's celebrate, and then let's get to work.
