"Testing for Harmful Algal Toxins" is a Citizen Science Project that provides microcystin testing kits to activists and sponsors trainings in communities. Sierra Club activists concerned about cyanobacteria blooms in freshwater lakes, rivers, or streams can use these kits to test for the presence of the most prevalent algal toxin, microcystin. If it is found their test results will enable them to provide their communities with an “early warning system” that will prompt others to take actions to address and prevent these problems.
Click here if you would like to apply for some test kits: Toxin-Test Kit Sub Grant Application. Applications will be reviewed for consistency with the goals of this citizen science project.
Applicants approved for receiving Test Kits will be asked to attend a virtual training session or one of our "in-person" workshops in Illinois.
