Sierra Club Chicago Statement on Election Night Results

Chicago, IL. -- Yesterday, 11 of the 16 environmental champions endorsed by the Sierra Club Illinois Chapter PAC either won their respective elections or will advance to run-off races in the Chicago municipal election. Sierra Club celebrates these victories and looks forward to furthering our support for climate champions dedicated to Chicago’s fight for environmental justice and our 100% clean energy future in the April 4 run-off election.

In response, Sierra Club Illinois released the following statement:

“Last night’s victories are critical to our continued work to ensure all Chicagoans have the right to clean air, clean water, and equitable communities, and Sierra Club looks forward to working with our newly elected alderpeople to ensure just that,” said Sierra Club Illinois Director Jack Darin. “The Chicago City Council will be grappling with critical issues in the coming months and years—decarbonizing our electric sector, ensuring accessible clean transportation for all, and fighting environmental injustice—and these elected leaders will be instrumental in those fights.”

“Sierra Club members turned out in force in support of our endorsed candidates this winter. Members participated in over 100 events and completed nearly 450 volunteer shifts to run our grassroots endorsement process and elect our endorsed candidates,” said Sierra Club Chicago Political Chair David Teeghman. “Motivated by yesterday’s victories, we are excited to continue our efforts to support Angela Clay in the 46th ward and, if the vote by mail ballots determine the need for a run-off in the 1st ward, Alderman Daniel La Spata in the April 4 run-off election. These wards need leaders committed to fighting for Chicago’s clean energy future and environmental justice, and we remain united with these candidates in this fight.”
