Help Stop a New Gas-Fired Power Plant: Contact the Illinois EPA

Help stop a new Illinois gas power plant in Pawnee, ILFor years, Texas-based EmberClear has proposed building a costly new gas-fired power plant in Pawnee, Illinois. Since the project would be built near homes and a school, the idea doesn't sit well with some folks in the mid-state village. And since the project also poses serious health and environmental risks in the midst of a climate crisis, the idea doesn't sit well with Illinois environmentalists either.

In fact, Sierra Club has stood with neighbors in opposing the project for four years—beginning when zoning permits for the proposed plant were filed.

To proceed with construction, EmberClear still needs approval from the Illinois EPA. Your comment could help stop the permit—so take action now.

Today, as we struggle with extreme droughts, destructive fires, and unhealthy air quality, construction of new gas-fired power plants is one of the greatest climate threats Illinois faces. Energy corporations like EmberClear are making a last-chance money grab by investing in short-term gas infrastructure while gas prices are rising. Like other dirty industries in Illinois, EmberClear would likely leave a mess for the community of Pawnee to deal with.

And given market forces at play, these companies probably could never deliver on the big promises they made when they came into town. As of 2019, according to a Rocky Mountain Institute study, 90 percent of new gas-fired capacity to be built within four years could be cost-effectively avoided with clean energy portfolios. Prioritizing clean energy investment in these cases would unlock $29 billion in net customer savings and avoid 100 million tons of CO2 emissions each year.

The recent passage of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act is a huge win for the climate and clean energy in Illinois. However, we must continue to fight back against dirty energy corporations, like EmberClear, trying to build new gas plants at this pivotal moment for Illinois’ future.

To help stop EmberClear from getting its permit, please submit written comments to the Illinois EPA by December 17. Use this guide to prepare your comments.
