Balloon Releases Harm the Environment

Photo by Luca UpperBalloon releases can raise awareness or honor memories. They also can cause harm. Released balloons can choke wildlife or cause animals to suffer internal blockages. Balloon strings can entangle wildlife. Balloons can cause significant damage when they come into contact with power lines. Released balloons also become litter.

We know there are better ways to celebrate, including blowing bubbles, holding candlelight vigils, and planting trees.

A bill under consideration in the Illinois legislature would amend the Environmental Protection Act by putting limitations on balloon releases. Please ask your Illinois legislator to co-sponsor HB0418 to help it become law. Read a synopsis of the bill.

Here’s a suggested message you can send to your representatives in Springfield:

As your constituent, I am asking that you support HB0418 by becoming a co-sponsor. Balloon releases negatively affect the environment, including harming wildlife and causing damage to property. Essentially, it is littering. There are many environmentally friendly alternatives for bringing awareness to issues, celebrating a life or commemorating an event. Thank you.
