Open Space Campaigns Gather Petitions at County Fair

For five days in late July, volunteers from Save our Forest Preserves, the Green Corridor Coalition and the Woods & Wetlands Group talked with visitors at the Lake County Fair about protecting open spaces. They also gathered hundreds of petition signatures.

A core building block shared by all three open space campaigns is public outreach and education. Each summer, Woods & Wetlands volunteers table at local and regional fairs to discuss important conservation and environmental issues with fellow community members.

Volunteers at the Lake County Fair gathered upwards of 800 petition signatures for two campaigns to protect local open spaces.

One campaign is an effort to protect the Waukegan Savanna, which is part of the Lake County Forest Preserves, from proposed development at Waukegan National Airport.

The second campaign is a long-standing Sierra Club effort to turn the former Rt. 53 Extension corridor into a state park.

If you would like more information about either of our open space campaigns or can suggest local events where we should table, please reach out to Staff Organizer Sam Beard at sam.beard@sierraclub.org.

Missed the county fair but still want to sign the petition?
