What is Key to Our Endorsements?
Sierra Club has a 125-year history of protecting all parts of the natural environment. Today, Sierra Club’s mission means “leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.” The goal is to achieve ambitious and just climate solutions. Climate change will damage our natural resources, impose increasing financial burdens, contribute to migration and war, and exacerbate inequality. Unless climate change is effectively addressed, everything else we care about is threatened.
We have endorsed local candidates who will prioritize carbon emission reduction by promoting energy efficiency and clean/renewable energy in county, residential and commercial buildings; expanding non-auto modes of transportation (walking, biking, using public transit); promoting use of electric vehicles; focusing development around public transit hubs and doing so fairly, by expanding affordable housing in transit-oriented development; establishing resiliency planning; reducing air pollution; protecting our water supplies and green spaces from development where it does not belong; and transitioning to repurposing materials and reducing waste.
