September In-Person Presentation by Dr. Tamra Reall, Field Specialist in Horticulture, on the Missouri Master Gardener Program

Come and hang out with like-minded people who care about conservation and the planet, in a convivial setting!
Our September speaker will be Dr. Tamra Reall, Field Specialist in Horticulture with the University of Missouri Extension - Urban West, will give a presentation about the Missouri Master Gardener program in the KC area, including how it differs from the Master Naturalist program.
Also, there will be an Action Item, where we contact legislators or submit comments about an issue.
We look forward to sharing food and drinks and learning more!
We will pre-order pizza, so please be sure to register so we can have an accurate head count. Drinks are on your own! We will pass the hat to pay for the pizza and salad.

Did you  know that the population of monarch butterflies migrating to Mexico has declined by 80% since the 1990s? Adding to this, data from two sources indicate Missouri is a "migration desert": no treetop roosts of migrating monarchs have been reported since 2018, and data from 300 micro-transmitters on monarchs in 2025 showed an avoidance of Missouri during migration.
Cellular Tracking Technology (CTT), the manufacturer of the Blu+ Radio tags has stock available—so a "pilot project" is underway to tag ten monarchs near Booneville, Missouri in September. The tagging is being coordinated between Kristen Baum (Monarch Watch Director) and Laura Semken (volunteer coordinator at Big Muddy Fish & Wildlife Refuge). Kristen is very familiar with these radio tags and has lined out what is needed; she says that 20-30 monarchs will need to be captured and examined before ten will be carefully tagged. The exact date(s) and time of tagging will be determined September; it is anticipated for Sept. 20th and/or Sept. 27th.
The order of the ten tags from CTT is expected to arrive mid-September. We are inviting individuals and groups to help with funding these tags by "adopting" a monarch. The cost for each solar-powered transmitter is $218.50; donors can name their monarch, and the path to Michoacán Mexico can be tracked.

City Hall Wants to Hear from You! Check out these five opportunities to engage; Have a say in urban agriculture: The Kansas City, Missouri Planning and Development Department and the Office of Environmental Quality are updating the urban agriculture ordinance. The updates aim to reorganize the code for clarity, be more specific about what is allowed under each use, and re-name the use categories. You can review the draft amendment and answer a survey on the City's Speakeasy public engagement site. Kansas City is developing a Circular Organics Economy—a system that keeps food and organic materials in productive use for as long as possible. Instead of sending valuable resources to landfills, a circular approach prioritizes preventing food waste, rescuing edible food for people, composting food scraps, improving soil health, creating local jobs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Add your comments to the City's Speakeasy public engagement site while you can! Kansas City, Missouri is working with stakeholders across the city on a plan that will address how to expand and enhance Kansas City's bikeways and trails network. We love native plants and so does city hall! Kansas City wants to hear your opinion on how to support and increase native gardens across the metro.
