The Sierra Club Ventura Network hosted an informational meeting on May 21 on the outdoor patio in Ventura.
Dozens of people attended to meet others who shared values and interests, information about becoming a local environmental leader and tapping into Sierra Club tools to broaden your world.
They also learned about immediate threats, such as dismantling the California Condor Recovery Program, increasing timber production in Los Padres National Forest, harming endangered species, a gas transmission across from an elementary school, extending an Oxnard fossil fuel power plant slated for shutdown, and defunding of federal agencies such as Park and Forest services and marine sanctuaries, among much more.
Also, on the agenda was how to access environmental news and action alerts, attending local Sierra Club hikes and volunteering locally to save the environment. Examples included the Condor Call newspaper, blogs and email alerts for those who sign up.
Several Sierra Club members spoke notably about the issues mentioned above, the history and effectiveness of the club’s activities and connections with many other like-minded groups. While the club provided pizza, the participants were hungry for getting involved.
The June meeting featured a tour with a stunning Channel view from the Botanical Garden followed by an organizing meeting at E.P Foster library.
The next meeting takes place on Wednesday, July 16 at the charming, modern midtown venue VEN VEN.
