October Program - “Nashville Long-term Solid Waste Master Plan”

What: Metro Nashville Public Works and Davidson County Solid Waste Region Board are working to create a long-term Solid Waste Master Plan with the ultimate goal of achieving zero waste to landfill in the future. The purpose of the Master Plan is to evaluate Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County’s existing waste management system and provide options to improve and enhance the system and increase waste reduction and diversion. Kelly Tipler will cover the process that was taken to create the Master Plan, a status report of where the city is on the plan, and steps that are being taken toward zero waste.

Kelly TiplerKelly Tipler has worked in non-profit administration since 2000. She founded the Tennessee Respite Coalition in 2000, was on the founding board of Pet Community Center and most recently founded Turnip Green Creative Reuse in 2010. She has a passion for non-profit service largely focused in community organizing. She and her husband created Upturn Consulting and have helped numerous small businesses with marketing, business systems and strategic planning. Currently she is the Director of Beautification for Metropolitan Nashville Public Works, where she continues her passion of diverting materials from landfills and finding sustainable solutions. November Program - Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO)

What: Inspiring Connections Outdoors is an outings program where volunteer leaders collaborate with community partners to get people outdoors, especially youth, who may not have access on their own to safely discover the wonders of the natural world. Through outdoor experiences, we promote appreciation and protection of the natural environment, provide opportunities for personal growth, and foster respect of self, others, and the environment.

Charlie High is a leader of the Sierra Club Middle Tennessee Group and Co-Chair of ICO in Nashville. He has years of experience leading young people on outings and hikes in nature. Many of these kids are from the inner city where they seldom get a chance to get close to nature and learn about the environment.

Tonight Charlie will share stories and pictures of the outings. Take a look at our Inspiring Connections Outdoors page on our Middle Tennessee Group web site. Then, when you are ready to share in Charlie's excitement go to this page and volunteer to be part of this great program for young people.
