Transportation Committee

The mission of the Sierra Club Georgia Chapter's Transportation Committee is to minimize pollution from transportation and the build-environment in a way that addresses historic injustices and improves mobility for all. To do that, we will educate, promote, and advocate for cleaner transportation alternatives and development patterns across the state, as well as work with other advocacy organizations on projects and efforts of shared interest.

The population of Georgia is expected to grow to 13.4 million by 2050. As our state continues to grow, so too does the pressure we place on our environment: particulate pollution from vehicles threatens our air, water, and soil; sprawling development threatens ecosystems and wastes energy; and greenhouse gas emissions drive present and ever worsening climate change, harming vulnerable populations across Georgia and beyond.

All of these harms have come at the cost of our communities’ mobility, economic opportunity, and health. Though all Georgians experience the overall harm of past transportation and development choices, low-income and minority communities have been especially hurt, and all progress towards a better future for all Georgian’s must include addressing those injustices.

We work to reduce dependence on cars and trucks by securing more funding for sustainable transportation choices like mass transit, micro-mobility, walking, and electric vehicles. We further work to improve our build environments, from the small town to the bustling metropolis through dense, sustainable land-use.
