Big Wins for Offshore Wind

March was a big month for offshore wind. Despite President Trump’s grudge against wind power and illegal attempts to stop its progress, multiple offshore wind projects are moving forward. At a time when our families are feeling the strain of rising energy costs, wind energy offers us a path to reliable, affordable power while cutting pollution that’s driving the climate crisis.

Revolution Wind off the coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island has started delivering power to the grid in New England, while Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project began to deliver power to the Mid-Atlantic. At the same time, Vineyard Wind offshore wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts has completed construction.

How many homes can these projects provide power for?

Once fully operational, Revolution Wind will supply enough power for 350,000 local homes. This follows two stop-work orders issued by the Trump Administration in 2025. Both orders were overturned in court, allowing local workers to return to work and continue building.

Vineyard Wind is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 400,000 homes and businesses. The permitting process for Vineyard Wind started in 2017. Most recently, courts overturned a stop-work order from the Trump administration when the project was more than 90 percent complete and already delivering electricity. Even as their court case unfolded, Vineyard Wind helped New Englanders weather winter storm Fern – preventing blackouts and keeping prices from spiking even higher.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is on track to be the largest offshore wind project in the US. When construction is complete, its 176 wind turbines will power up to 660,000 homes. It is anticipated that the project will save customers $3 billion during its first decade of operations.

Why is it important for offshore wind to keep moving forward?

Offshore wind is critical to lowering electricity costs, reducing pollution, and improving grid reliability. Multiple analyses have proven that offshore wind will save electric customers by lowering prices and insulating against the price volatility of methane gas.

With the pain that millions are feeling right now with record-high energy prices, new clean energy resources are exactly what we need to cut our dependence on expensive fossil fuels and keep our bills stable.

These victories show that in the face of obstacles and challenges put up by Trump, offshore wind prevails. For years, we’ve seen a promise blowing in the winds off our coasts - now we’re seeing that promise become a reality. A cheaper, cleaner, more secure energy future is within our reach, and the Sierra Club will keep fighting for more offshore wind so the lights stay on and energy prices keep falling.

How you can help
