Call for Nominations - Board of Directors 2027
Calling all those interested and qualified to apply to run for the 2027 Election for the Board of Directors!
The Nominating Committee invites dedicated members who want to take on the exciting and challenging role of being a member of Sierra Club’s Board of Directors to run as a candidate in the 2027 election.
Serving on the Board of Directors is the highest office a volunteer can hold in the Sierra Club. Sierra Club is dedicated to building a powerful and inclusive environmental movement and needs board members from diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences to reach our highest potential.
Why Consider Joining the Board
Directors set the priorities, policies, and national budget (with member input) that enable volunteers and staff to carry out Sierra Club’s mission. Each Director experiences the rewards and satisfaction of being a part of the team leading the most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. Sierra Club is committed to seeking a diverse pool of candidates and encourages members from any geographical region, background, race, gender or age to apply.
The Role of the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is composed of 15 elected volunteers, and has the legal responsibility and authority to oversee all staff and volunteer activities of Sierra Club. Together, Directors establish Sierra Club’s conservation priorities, internal policies, and develop budget guidelines and approve the budget.
The Board of Directors can expect to work towards the Board-approved 2030 Strategic Framework.
The Sierra Club Board is a working board. All board members are expected to devote sufficient time and energy to the tasks at hand. Each Director is expected to:
- Serve for a term of three years.
- Center equity, inclusion and justice as key principles of their work.
- Uphold Sierra Club’s core values.
- Prepare for and attend four (typically three-day) Board meetings annually, as well as monthly conference calls, emails, and other briefings.
- Serve actively on one or more Board committees and/or task forces.
- Receive reimbursement for travel and lodging, and a modest per diem during Board meetings and while on Sierra Club business.

APPLICATION PROCESS
All applicants are required to have been Sierra Club members continuously for one year prior to the close of nominations on January 13, 2027.

- The deadline for the application is October 2, 2026 at 11:59 pm PT.
- If you would like to draft your responses in advance, a downloadable application is available here.
- Nominating Committee decisions will likely be made after the petition candidate application deadline. If you would like to be on the ballot outside of the Nominating Committee process, please apply as a petition candidate by the deadline.

The election rules and the entire Bylaws & Standing Rules are available via this link. After the close of nominations, we will interview selected applicants by video conference in November. Candidates advanced by the Nominating Committee will stand for election by the general membership.
