The Sierra Club is proud to send your official 2021 Board of Directors Election materials. Please take a moment to learn about the candidates for the 2021-2024 term of the Board of Directors.
As a voting member, we hope you take this opportunity to exercise one of the most important responsibilities of your membership. Voting only takes a few moments of your time, but the impact to our organization, our mission, and our planet is far-reaching.
How you vote will determine how we achieve our collective vision to protect our planet and all the species sharing it.
As a peer-driven organization of 3.8 million members and activists, we are bound together by our love of the environment, our commitment to environmental justice, and our determination to find ways to slow and even stop the climate crisis.
To do that, we need to stand together, united by that common belief, led by leaders who embrace our mission and can drive our agenda in what is becoming an increasingly contentious time.
Electing the very best candidates to our Board of Directors will determine the agenda we intend to pursue as we work to tackle the challenges that lay ahead. Visionary leadership will be essential to the Sierra Club as we work to undo the damage done by the Trump Administration and strengthen and enact the boldest initiatives of the Biden-Harris administration to promote climate justice; restore our Democracy; and protect our air, water, wildlife and communities.
The 2021 Sierra Club Official Ballot includes the eight candidates for the five open seats on the Board of Directors for the 2021-2024 term. All were nominated by a Nominating Committee, chaired by Glen Besa.
The committee sought candidates who are: dedicated to the purposes and goals of the Sierra Club; able and willing to accept the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of a Director; able and willing to dedicate sufficient personal time to Board duties; able to think and plan strategically and politically; aware of critical environmental issues; knowledgeable about the structure and operations of Sierra Club; and, able and willing to deal with the broad range of issues that come before the Board. There are no petition candidates this year.&
The Board of Directors, composed of 15 elected volunteers, is the governing body of the Sierra Club. The Board has the responsibility and authority to oversee all staff and volunteer activities of Sierra Club, to establish Sierra Club’s conservation priorities and internal policies, and to adopt and implement the annual budget. The Board of Directors elects Sierra Club’s officers, including the President and the Executive Committee, and selects Sierra Club’s Executive Director. Directors typically also serve on at least one of the Board’s advisory committees.
Directors whose terms expire in 2021 are: Ross Macfarlane, Debbie Heaton, Tony Fuller, Chad Hanson and Margrete Strand Rangnes. All except Margrete Strand Rangnes are running for re-election.
Thank you in advance for your commitment to our organization and your thoughtful consideration of the 2021 Board of Directors candidates. In times like these, exemplary leadership will be essential as we navigate an increasingly challenging political climate.
