Chicagoland Air Quality Map

Chicagoland communities are exposed to unsafe air regularly - but often the data available isn’t granular enough to help residents make active decisions regarding their health. This ongoing project is a partnership between local community organizations throughout Chicagoland to bolster local air monitoring efforts by increasing the number of monitors and range of pollutants being monitored. We’re proud to be partnering on this effort with Foss Park District, Clean Power Lake County, Neighbors for Environmental Justice, and The Plant. A number of monitors have already been deployed and we hope to expand the network in the coming year.

For some families, having more concrete information about air quality can mean the difference between a nice day at the park or a harrowing trip to the emergency room to treat a severe asthma attack. Because of regular high levels of pollution in Chicagoland’s air, residents suffer from increased rates of respiratory diseases, heart diseases, and cancer. Addressing air quality through stricter emissions standards would save lives and reduce rates of disease across Chicagoland. Learn more about the communities we are partnering with by clicking the narrative section and exploring the map below. Feel free to download the data and sign up for alerts when monitors near you detect unsafe levels of pollution.

We'll be setting up an alert system soon so you can get notified when bad air quality days happen at monitors that matter to you. To get an update when the alert system is ready, or if you have questions or concerns about the map, please email our Illinois Clean Heat Organizer, Tzippy Horowitz (tzippy.horowitz@sierraclub.org)
