Tracking the Planned Gas Power Plant Buildout in the US

Across the country, companies are planning a massive buildout of new gas power plants.

Fracked gas is a danger to all communities, risking public healthenvironmental devastation, and climate disruption. Building new gas power plant infrastructure is an environmental justice issue because it is a particular danger to Black, Brown and Indigenous communities, who bear a disproportionate burden from pipeline construction and the other consequences of fracked gas.

The solution is a just, sustainable transition to 100% clean energy, which already affordably does the work of gas power plants without the risks of dangerous, dirty, fracked gas.

The Sierra Club maintains the most comprehensive database of planned gas power plants in the US. This tracker includes planned gas power plants other sources do not capture. For example, Sierra Club’s tracker includes power plants in utilities’ planning documents that do not yet have a specific location, which is when many other sources begin their tracking.

This interactive tracker includes information on all electric sector planned gas power plants in the US. Use the green buttons below to view information on the planned gas power plant buildout.
