Herbicides on Boulder County public lands

Update: On February 3, 2026, Marta Loachamin and Ashley Stolzmann decided to continue the moratorium on spraying herbicides on Red Hill. This is a victory that resulted from more than a thousand Boulder County residents contacting our county commissioners, asking them to stop the spraying. Scores of residents have shown up at meetings as well--as happened at the county commissioner town hall on January 22, where over 20 people stood and asked the commissioners to stop the spray. Thank you Boulder County!

The fight isn't over. We need to continue to tell the county commissioners that we do not want poisons on our public lands. But we can celebrate this small victory.

Background: January 21, 2026, the Boulder County commissioners voted to continue herbicide spraying on 3,000 acres of Boulder County public lands. Marta Loachamin and Claire Levy voted yes to the herbicide spraying; Ashley Stolzmann voted no.

Boulder County staff are still planning to expand the spraying of indaziflam—an herbicide that prevents seeds from sprouting—on 3,000 acres of our county public lands. Because of public outcry, there has been a brief halt to these plans. But this week, this halt will likely be reversed and the county will start spraying our public lands with indaziflam again. Once applied, these chemicals will remain toxic in the soil for between 3-9 years, preventing all seeds in the seedbank from sprouting.

What indaziflam does: As a pre-emergent herbicide, indaziflam prevents seeds from sprouting, whether they are annual or perennial seeds, non-native or native, “weed” or cultivated plant. In short, the soil becomes non-productive and can stay that way for 2-7 years.

Indaziflam can also have toxic effects on humans, other mammals, pollinators, and aquatic creatures of all forms. No matter how carefully applied, it can leach into groundwater, streams, and ponds; drift is also a problem.
