Defend Our Democracy: Volunteer Today

Learn more below about two essential programs to protect the right to vote and keep local polling places open—then sign up for one or both to get started!

For years, thousands of trained, nonpartisan volunteers have served as voters’ first line of defense against confusing voting rules, outdated infrastructure, rampant misinformation, and needless obstacles that make it more difficult for everyday Americans to vote.

We’ll help you find the best way to get involved—whether that’s monitoring polling places (from your vehicle, or remotely), watchdogging social media for disinformation and voters in need of help, or coordinating with election administrators to see what resources they may need or issues they may be having. You will not be alone, as you will connect voters with trained legal professionals, via the voter hotline, who can help them navigate the voting process and cast their ballots safely and securely.

This program is led by the organization Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights, Common Cause and other allies in the movement to defend democracy.

Time Commitment

There are a wide variety of tasks as Election Protection volunteers.

  • Most volunteers should plan to be available for most of Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, 2022, and for a few trainings in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
  • Other Election Protection opportunities include monitoring social media from home and voter outreach with shifts happening everyday.

Once you sign up, you'll be able to indicate your ability and time availability and will be trained accordingly.

As in 2020, we're again seeing the need for more poll workers for the 2022 midterm elections. Poll workers support early voting locations, ensure voting machines are working correctly, check voters in, and help minimize long lines and delays at polling places on Election Day. Because the number of poll workers at a polling place impacts whether a polling place opens on Election Day, poll worker shortages can lead to long lines and voter disenfranchisement, especially in low-income and communities of color.

Time Commitment

Often full-day on Election Day, November 8, 2022, but poll workers are also needed for early voting days. Some jurisdictions allow for shifts, others require full work days. Poll workers are usually paid for their work. Sign up to get started and you'll learn about your jurisdiction's process and requirements.

Get Started

Sign up with Power The Polls to show you’re interested in being a poll worker this fall.

Once you’ve signed up, depending on your jurisdiction, you will either be contacted by Power the Polls, a partner organization, or your local election administrators regarding your application.

Poll workers get trained and often get paid (depending on location).

Timeline

Sign up anytime before the end of September!
