Update on the Weyerhaeuser Plum Creek property

A new second and final vote to modify land use designations for the Weyerhaeuser property may be scheduled soon. Note: the city often changes their meeting agendas at the last minute, so be prepared to adjust your schedule accordingly in case they remove this item from Thursday's agenda.

Please RESUBMIT your letters, this is a NEW COMMISSION. Three of the four city commissioners that voted Yes on first reading have been replaced. We have a real chance of overturning that first vote, but we need people to re-submit their comments and speak at Thursday's meeting.

The meeting starts at 5:30pm. Please contact the City Commission before this meeting to let them know your opposition to sprawl in North Gainesville.

We have one more chance to stop this plan. Once zoning changes are approved, it would be very difficult to reverse course. We are asking that this current proposal for high density be rejected, and that city staff then redirect its energy to find ways to remove the existing Planned Development from its comprehensive plan and keep this property zoned for agriculture. Another option is to de-annex the parcels and allow the county to manage it, and perhaps add it to their Alachua Forever acquisition list as targeted.

Here's the email address for the city commission. Send them your updated comments before Thursday's meeting.

And please SPREAD THE WORD!

Concern regarding this proposed development include:

  • This area is a wetland and prone to flooding
  • The property is adjacent to the headwaters of three creeks.
  • The main access road is an un-expandable bottle-neck.
  • There are no existing services in the area.
