Sierra Club Georgia Chapter statement on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reasserting jurisdiction over proposed mine near Okefenokee Swamp

ATLANTA — On Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reasserted jurisdiction over the permitting of a proposed mine on Trail Ridge, the natural barrier on the eastern side of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

In response, Nancy Daves, Executive Committee member of the Sierra Club Georgia Chapter and chair of its Okefenokee Committee, issued the following statement:

“The Okefenokee Swamp is one of the most unique and ecologically diverse natural places in Georgia, and it is our responsibility to protect it for future generations. We applaud the decision to restore federal protections to these wetlands as well as the decision to restart the permit application process in order to make sure indigenous voices play a key role in decision making.

“We also want to thank our two Senators from Georgia, particularly Senator Ossoff, their tireless work to protect one of Georgia’s natural wonders and the thousands of people from around the world who together sent more than 100,000 public comments to agencies at all levels of government urging them to protect the Okefenokee.”
