The group followed the park’s designated nature trail, exploring a mix of dune, marsh, and woodland habitats that make Illinois Beach one of Lake County’s most remarkable natural areas. Midway through the hike, the group stopped at a vantage point overlooking the Waukegan Generating Station to discuss the site’s future, along with the nearby former Johns Manville property. Both locations remain central to community conversations about environmental cleanup and responsible redevelopment of Waukegan’s lakefront. Organizers described the event as both an opportunity to enjoy the park’s spring landscape and a chance for community members to reflect on the region’s ongoing transition to cleaner energy and healthier ecosystems.
