Ballot Initiative To Stop NECEC (CMP Corridor) Ruled Unconstitutional

As an individual committed to environmental justice, we want you to be aware of the shocking news from the Maine Supreme Court. Yesterday the Maine Supreme Court ruled that the referendum aiming to block the NECEC (CMP Corridor) Project is unconstitutional.

We are appalled by this decision and its undermining of our democracy. While the Maine Supreme Court has decided to deprive Mainers of their ability to vote this fall on the Corridor, our fight is not over.

The NECEC Project still faces numerous legal and political challenges. Sierra Club Maine will also redouble our effort to hold CMP and Hydro Quebec accountable for the environmental consequences of their proposed project.

The incredible efforts of each and every Mainer who worked tirelessly on the referendum drive or signed a petition has made a difference. While corporate interests have blatantly disregarded and distorted your voice, we will persist!

We believe that all people have a right to develop citizen’s initiatives without falling prey to outsized legal resources that are not accessible to all.

Sierra Club Maine continues to stand in solidarity with the First Nations (the Indigenous Peoples in Canada) against the NECEC Project, in order to preserve climate and economic justice, our woods, waters, and our state.

This is not the end. We will march on.

In solidarity,
