News: N.C. Sierra Club's endorsees pledge leadership on climate, other environmental issues

Gov. Roy Cooper headlines a roster of North Carolina candidates who won election or re-election this year with the endorsement of the N.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club.

"Sierra Club's endorsement and the support that they provided was critical to my race," said Sarah Crawford, who defeated Larry Norman for the N.C. Senate's District 18 seat in Wake County. "Their endorsement ensured that voters know that I will be an environmental champion in the legislature."

Crawford was one of 53 winning candidates for statewide or legislative offices who were endorsed by the N.C. Sierra Club. Five endorsed candidates for U.S. House won their races, as did 24 endorsed candidates for local offices such as county commission.

Cooper was endorsed by the N.C. Chapter for his first gubernatorial race in 2016. His support of a state government-wide plan for clean energy and climate action, as well as his opposition to offshore drilling, earned him a second endorsement for this year's race.

Volunteers with each of the Sierra Club's 13 local Groups in North Carolina vet candidates with questionnaires, interviews and reviews of records of leadership on environmental issues. The N.C. Chapter's political committee endorses candidates based on Group recommendations. Note that the N.C. Sierra Club did not endorse candidates in every race.
