The House and Senate held skeleton sessions this week, while the real action happened a few blocks over at Gov. Josh Stein's office, where he used his veto powers on some bills of interest to Sierrans.

"Senate Bill 266 was falsely labeled as a scheme to lower power bills, but the only bills that would be reduced would be those for commercial ratepayers and Duke Energy itself."

A bill that would release Duke Energy from its pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 will lead to an additional $23 billion in fuel costs for ratepayers and increase natural gas generation by almost 40 percent between 2030 and 2050, a new study...

The General Assembly's highly anticipated adjournment, scheduled for Thursday, didn’t happen. Now, Governor Stein has until July 4 to veto the "Ratepayer Risks Act," and other problematic bills are still in the pipeline.

We joined ratepayers and leaders of environmental and clean energy organizations at the N.C. General Assembly to encourage Gov. Josh Stein to veto Senate Bill 266, and to urge state House and Senate members to allow his veto to stand.

The session is winding down and the action is heating up at the legislature, which we're told will adjourn next week. The big news was yesterday's Senate concurrence vote to accept massive changes to S266, the bill we call the Ratepayer Risks Act.
