Welcome LatinXplorers - a New Hike Program in Hood River, OR!

We were privileged to partner with Latino Outdoors, The Next Door, Oregon Public Health Institute to run an Outing Leader and Basic First Aid Training in Spanish for 18 new hike leaders from the Latino community in Hood River, OR in August. Many thanks to the Willamette Partnership for helping to coordinate this grand adventure.  Look for these new LatinXplorers leading their community on local hikes, snowshoe and campouts.

Hiking in Hood River

Luz - I just started hiking not too long ago and have found it to be very enjoyable. Not only is it good for your health but it can help relieve stress and build and strengthen relationships when you hike with other people. There is nothing like a hike in the beautiful outdoors! I am so grateful that this training was provided to our community. It’s amazing to see that more and more opportunities like these are being provided to the Hispanic/Latino community. Through the training, not only are we contributing to better health of our community but we are also increasing leadership among the Latino community. My plan is to use what I learned to lead my own hiking groups so that other people can then learn that they can be leaders themselves. We can make positive changes happen in our community when we empower others.

Finding our Route

Jeremy - With this training I am hoping to introduce more people to the outdoors and it matters because these days adults and children alike spend a lot of time in front of screens (computer, TV, phone). This program can help people get out and exercise, and also let them appreciate the natural beauty of the area we live in.

Maria - What I learned was that I like to be outside more than I knew. I also think is important that when someone has a love for something that they share it with anyone that may want to learn about it. I already am planning some trips with my Zumba Class and already done a couple with my family.

What to look for on the trail.

Juan - I learned a lot about first aid which was very helpful. This matters because we live in an area where people are always outdoors and it is great to know how to lead and help them. I’m hoping to be able to lead or assist in leading group hikes.

Yesenia - I enjoyed el Compañerismo and the instructors. I loved that it was in Spanish and that we learned while enjoying the outdoors. We live in such a beautiful place and I am always so amazed at how many Latinos have lived here for decades and still haven't explored our areas and I know they would fall in love with the views and the waterfalls! Enjoying the gorge should be something everyone here gets the opportunity to do.
