WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This morning, amid a growing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, Donald Trump chose to launch a twitter attack on citizens in Puerto Rico and the Mayor of San Juan from the comforts of his golf club in New Jersey.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"It seems like the only person who woke up this morning & chose to insult the mayor of a city facing a humanitarian crisis is Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Sierra Club members and people all over the world have been stepping up to help the people of Puerto Rico when they need it. We're raising funds that will go directly to community partners who are helping with recovery and rebuilding in Puerto Rico and other storm struck areas.

“Our members and partners in Puerto Rico already work hard  to protect their communities from big polluters and luxury developments. They fought a hotel down the street from where Trump's hotel went bankrupt and created a nature reserve in it's place. They fought dangerous incinerators and coal ash dumps. And now, they are fighting to rebuild lives and recover from this storm.

“Right now, we’re packaging nearly 1000 solar lamps that will be shipped to our partners at Casa Pueblo. These solar lanterns will be delivered to help provide some light to  the communities that have been hit the hardest. Places like San Juan, Caño, Arecibo, Luquillo, Fajardo, Peñuelas and Guayama need leadership like that Mayor Cruz is providing.

“Sadly, Trump is only playing divisive politics that put his own ego first, rather than those he is sworn to protect. The real crisis of leadership is in Washington, and everyone seems to know that but Trump.

“Meanwhile, first responders, the people of Puerto Rico and people all over the world are doing the hard work to recover. Sierra Club and so many others are committed to a just and equitable recovery, and we’re moving forward to that goal no matter who is in the White House."
