WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The House Natural Resources Committee today will take up a series of anti-wildlife and endangered species bills. The extreme bills undermine the role of science in endangered species decisions, reduce government accountability and collectively gut the Endangered Species Act, one of the country’s most successful conservation laws. Measures would even go so far as to prevent the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture from controlling toxic lead shot and tackle on public lands, despite the known dangers of its use.

In anticipation, Kirin Kennedy, associate legislative director of Lands and Wildlife for the Sierra Club issued the following statement.

“Protecting fish, wildlife, and plants is good for us all. These bills fail to recognize the importance of our connection to the natural world. They threaten rule of law. They threaten to take away the public’s voice in wildlife management. And they threaten the scientific foundation that has helped the Endangered Species Act save beloved animals like the bald eagle from extinction."
