Washington, D.C. - Today, a number of Trump campaign officials and associates were charged with serious federal crimes as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign's involvement with Russia's interference in our elections. Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been charged with 12 counts including conspiracy against the United States, according to the Justice Department.

Additionally, former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos struck a cooperation agreement with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, secretly pleading guilty three weeks ago to lying to federal agents about his contacts with Kremlin-connected Russians.

In Response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has repeatedly made clear that he does not respect basic constitutional, judicial and democratic norms, and that he is willing to push the envelope to ensure self preservation when he thinks he is under threat. For these reasons, it is essential that Congress take immediate action to ensure that the President is unable to interfere with the progress of the Special Counsel’s investigation. Only when Congress makes clear to Trump that he cannot shut this investigation down or pardon himself and his allies without consequence can the American people feel confident that justice is being served. It’s critical that Congress safeguard our Democracy and the rule of law, and they can start by showing that the President is not above either.”
