Oakland, CA -- Yesterday, Donald Trump made racist remarks about countries whose populations are predominantly people of color when discussing immigration, instead asking why we do not have more people come from Norway.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Many of us were raised with the image of the Statue of Liberty in our minds, welcoming ‘the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ Donald Trump’s racist remarks yesterday remind us that he does not see our country as a welcoming beacon of freedom or a place that helps fulfill the promise of liberty and justice for all. We cannot allow his comments and those who aid his goal of denigrating, dismissing, or despising the people who make America great speak louder than those of us who seek to build a more just and welcoming nation. The Sierra Club will continue to support immigrants as we work together to build a nation that works for and is representative of real American values of inclusivity.”
