Washington, DC -- Tonight, Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union speech.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“There is nothing Presidential about a speech and an Administration that embody, at their core, a profound attack on the truth, our health, our families, and our planet.

“The reason Trump has the lowest approval ratings of any President in history is because his deceit in the service of a hateful, dangerous agenda that only serves the corporate elite, entitled polluters and billionaires knows no bounds.”

“Trump’s false claims tonight about his destructive energy policies are emblematic of his presidency, in that the weight of reality and the will of the people are not on his side. Trump again tried to claim that coal is not in decline, and spin his attempts to drill, mine, and frack our public lands and waters. The truth is that a coal plant retirement has been announced every 16 days since he was elected, and the American people overwhelmingly oppose his repeated attacks on our public lands.

“Americans do not want polluted air and water, we do not want a racist wall, or immigration policies that tear families apart, and we do not want a president who attacks our shared values at every turn. Under Donald Trump, the State of our Union is polluted. But together, we will continue to organize a movement that resists Trump and his dangerous, racist agenda.”
