WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a narrow decision in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"This narrow decision is disappointing, but it is not the final word. There are two things we must remember in the aftermath of today’s ruling. The first is that LGBTQ people face unacceptable discrimination throughout all levels of our government and our society. The second is that LGBTQ people have equal rights before the law, which is a fact that today’s decision does recognize. Our staff, volunteers, members, supporters, and allies all continue to work to ensure those rights are protected, recognized, and upheld. We at the Sierra Club remain committed to working toward a future where every American can see all our most basic rights secured, from equal protection under the law to the rights we all have to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities.”
