Sierra Club’s Statement on Senate Judiciary Committee’s Advancement of Brett Kavanaugh

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to advance the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. A bipartisan group of senators have called for a delay in the confirmation to allow for a full FBI investigation into Kavanaugh.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“This has been a sad week for America and the Senate. This vote should never have happened. Brett Kavanaugh should be disqualified based on his record alone, and his nomination should have been withdrawn because of the testimony of Dr. Blasey Ford and his belligerent behavior yesterday. Chuck Grassley and the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are ignoring the experiences of the victims of sexual assault to push their extreme agenda and their dangerous nominee, putting partisan politics above principled action. Women deserve better. We all deserve better. None of us will forget who stood on the right side of history, and who instead stood with Brett Kavanaugh.

“Brett Kavanaugh has already disqualified himself from the Supreme Court multiple times over, and the Senate must reject his nomination.”
