EAST BRADFORD TOWNSHIP, PA - On Tuesday, October 9, 2018, East Bradford Township and the Township of Haverford, Pennsylvania adopted resolutions establishing goals of transitioning to 100 percent clean, renewable electricity by 2035, and 100 percent renewable energy for heat and transportation by 2050.
The East Bradford Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution that establishes a goal of transitioning to 100 percent clean and renewable energy community-wide. The resolution states the township will completely transition to clean renewable electricity by 2035, and heat and transportation by 2050. The full resolution can be found here.
“East Bradford looks forward to working with other municipalities in the region to find clean energy opportunities that will benefit everyone in our community,” said Mandie Cantlin, township manager for East Bradford Township.
East Bradford joins four other municipalities in Chester County, PA that are committed to a future powered by 100 percent renewable energy: Downingtown, Kennett Township, Phoenixville, and West Chester.
The Haverford Township Board of Commissioners adopted the same goal of transitioning to 100 percent clean renewable electricity by 2035 and 100 percent renewable energy for heat and transportation by 2050. The resolution can be found here.
Haverford Township is the first municipality in neighboring Delaware County, PA to establish this goal. All six Pennsylvania communities committed to 100 percent renewable energy are from the southeastern region of the state.
"Tonight's resolutions were solid next steps for the township in addressing this looming global threat. We will need the cooperation of our residents businesses as well as other towns, cities, states and nations to prevent some of the catastrophic events that could be produced by progressive global warming," said Gerry Hart, Haverford Township Commissioner.
“These two commitments further southeastern Pennsylvania’s renewable energy leadership across the state. When local communities commit to transitioning to 100 percent clean, renewable energy, they pave the way for others across the region. We’re all ready for clean air, water, affordable energy bills, and a stronger local economy,” said Jim Wylie, local Ready For 100 volunteer leader.
Both East Bradford and Haverford commit to drafting an energy transition plan that will include interim milestones, financial impacts, equity metrics, potential financing mechanisms, and percentage of clean energy that will be locally produced.
Across the United States, 88 towns and cities have committed to 100 percent clean, renewable energy like wind and solar.
